[ SHOWGSD-L ] now conditioning

Guys, the afternoons in Texas have been 105 degrees until 7 PM. Mornings
are almost as bad. The only way to condition dogs in Texas in the summer is
by
swimming. My kennel building's room is 25 ft. up with an air vent running
across the ridge. The runs are sealed in white epoxy to reflect the heat (Yes,
it does work) and most of them are covered for shade. The last of the runs
have shade cloth. We have misters and an eight ft. fan at one end. The dogs
stay out side for acclimation, so they can go to shows, but I would not herd
here now. The fleas are even dead. VBG

Hey Jess...your post brought up an observation and a pet peeve...anybody
else but me notice the trend lately that the dogs are too thin???? Is
"thin"
taking the place of "condition"????
I want a dog that is carrying a bit of muscle. Now, you'll never get that
if they are put in a 6 x 10 run all day and/or crated a bunch. So is the
next
best thing keeping them too thin?
I ask because this past heat wave I saw more than a few dogs not handle it
well at all.
Pet peeve; these dogs are supposed to be able to go out and work a full day.
I've been to sheep herding trials in July and we didn't walk around with
spray bottles and cool coats! Now, I'm all for keeping a dog comfortable,
but
when a little heat does them in, you have to wonder...
