wrote what I learned at the seminar, no more no less. Did not comment
further.Â
Now, for the record.......I have been told by a vet I trust that it is OK to
use Baytril for the first 10 days after breeding because the embryos don't
implant until later. (day 17 I think it is) If the embryos are floating
around in the amniotic fluid they are not exposed to the Baytril. After they
implant you would run the risk of problems. So...I've used it for the first
10 days, but that's all, and I'm not trying to tell people what to do either.Â

That's all well and good Cyndi.  The reason I included the info from  the
drug manufacturer's insert on their OWN drug in my original post is so that Â
folks could do their own homework. Â The quotes in my post, again, came from Â
the package insert. Â It wasn't my opinion, it wasn't something I'd "just Â
heard".

Right from the insert: "Use with caution in dogs used for breeding Â
purposes, during pregnancy or in lactating bitches." and " Enrofloxacin
(Baytril Â
Rx) is reported to cause cartilage abnormalities in growing puppies."

If folks want to use it, that's their business obviously. Â I'm on the Â
record saying I won't.  If a bitch had a culture come back bad I'd take  care
of
whatever issue was there and skip the season.  I'm not telling  other
people what to do, just saying what I'd do.

Dr. Â Hutchinson gave the education seminar at the National last year. I
pulled  out my notes from that night...... He stated that a recent study had
been  done that found that the use of antiobiotics before breeding was  not
helpful, but that Batryl given for 10 days after breeding  increased
conception by 12%. He did not give a reason for the increase, Â just gave the
results of that particular study.....
