so you would rather take a chance that a bitch will have to be spayed due to a
severe infection, rather than give her antibiotices a vet prescribed. it is my
understanding that bitches with pyo will often get it at each heat cycle,
whether bred or not, and if not treated will most often have to be spayed.

That's all well and good Cyndi. The reason I included the info from the drug
manufacturer's insert on their OWN drug in my original post is so that folks
could do their own homework. The quotes in my post, again, came from the
package insert. It wasn't my opinion, it wasn't something I'd "just heard".
Right from the insert: "Use with caution in dogs used for breeding purposes,
during pregnancy or in lactating bitches." and " Enrofloxacin (Baytril Rx) is
reported to cause cartilage abnormalities in growing puppies."
If folks want to use it, that's their business obviously. I'm on the record
saying I won't. If a bitch had a culture come back bad I'd take care of
whatever issue was there and skip the season. I'm not telling other people
what to do, just saying what I'd do.

Dr. Hutchinson gave the education seminar at the National last year. I
pulled out my notes from that night...... He stated that a recent study had
been done that found that the use of antiobiotics before breeding was not
helpful, but that Batryl given for 10 days after breeding increased
conception by 12%. He did not give a reason for the increase, just gave the
results of that particular study.....
