A dog misbehaving on the table is not a good enough excuse to dump it.
The table is for examining, not for judging. Dogs are to be judged on
the floor. That's one.
Second, in a short interview after the group, Barry Clothier, the
handler, explained that the dog had recently been roughed up on the
table by a heavy handed (and no doubt stupid) judge and that he was
reacting all the time now.
I have seen this Pug at many shows and he has always stood like a
rock when I've seen him. Recently there have been many comments about a
particular judge and how roughly he has treated toy dogs on the table...
as someone who once had a dog (a Corgi) nearly ruined by mistreatment by
a judge while doing her examination on the table, I understand
completely why a dog would react badly afterwards. It is interesting to
note that I did not complain about that judge...but two judges who were
watching judging that day wrote separate letters to the AKC and
described the incident beautifully. I only found out because the AKC
contacted me and asked me about it.
There is NEVER any excuse for being rough with a dog on the table or
anywhere else, not by a judge, anyway...maybe if the dog attacks the
judge, OK. If you don't know how to look at a toy dog's mouth, you
shouldn't be judging toy breeds.
There have also been several complaints lately about rough handling
by judges in the Boxer ring...
