Re the not being to use those hubs...
It isn't because they don't take the kennel SIZE... It's because the total
weight exceeds their maximum limit with kennel PLUS those larger dogs. For
those who have smaller size GSDs, where they total weight under 100#, those
dogs can indeed fly on American.
It seems that Delta or United are the only options of the 3 major airlines
I looked at for those larger dogs who still fit in a size 500 crate...

Also.....I am surprised to see Phoenix Ariz., Miami, Fla. and Charlotte,
NC listed as
connecting Main Hub for flying dogs into!!? Phoenix is main hub for
Southwest and
they have never EVER flown dogs. Miami..? for which airline? Charlotte
WAS for
USAir...but remember USAir quit flying dogs .... right after our
National was there?
When did these become main hubs for dog friendly airlines??? Same with
American
( I think ) and that eliminates Dallas Ft. Worth if that is the case. They
are now
America West...
You ALWAYS have to talk to someone in Cargo to actually book a dog for
flight...the
airport specs and agents at the Terminals are no help
Terry is right.
We have to find sites that are drivable or near the very few main
hubs....or both.

Like I said the ability to fly your dog to a national is no more. It is
time to select national show sites making it possible for west middle east
to drive a reasonable distance every 3 years. If you want to rent a private
Jet and attend every year that is great!! good for you :0)

IT IS GETTING IMPOSSIBLE TO SHIP DOGS ALTOGETHER, ESPECIALLY IF THEY FLY
AS CHECKED BAGGAGE WITH OWNER ON THE FLIGHT!
I decided to have a look-see at the major airlines for myself regarding
shipping/flying with a dog:
from the Delta website:
*767 Aircraft Restriction*
Animals will not be accepted as checked baggage or cargo on any Delta
operated 767 aircraft. There are no exceptions to this restriction for any
passenger. Learn more
<http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/airports-and-aircraft/Aircraft.html>
about your aircraft. Other restrictions may apply.
EVEN THOUGH... (from Boeing's specs)
*Aft Cargo Door opening:*
Height: 66"
Width: 70"
*Acceptable Kennel Sizes:*
Type 500 series or smaller:
Width: 27"
Height: 30"
Depth: 40"
*Airbus 330-200 Aircraft Restriction*
Animals will not be accepted as checked baggage on any Delta operated
A330-200 aircraft. There are no exceptions to this restriction for any
passenger. Learn more
<http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/airports-and-aircraft/Aircraft.html>
about your aircraft. Other restrictions may apply
EVEN THOUGH... (from Airbus's website)
Another advantage of the A330-200’s fuselage is its large-capacity
underfloor cargo holds, which accommodate industry-standard LD3 containers
in side-by-side loading, as well as 96-inch pallets.
These are LARGE planes!
Per American Airlines' regulations:
Flights with connections
If you’re traveling on a connecting flight, your checked pets will only be
able to connect through one of our hub cities. If you’re connecting between
American and another airline, you’ll need to claim and recheck your pet and
pay applicable charges to each carrier.
- Charlotte, NC (CLT)
- Chicago O'Hare, IL (ORD)
- Dallas Fort Worth, TX (DFW)
- John F Kennedy New York, NY (JFK)
- LaGuardia, NY (LGA)
- Los Angeles, CA (LAX)
- Miami, FL (MIA)
- Philadelphia, PA (PHL)
- Phoenix, AZ (PHX)
- Washington Reagan, DC (DCA)
Kennel guidelines for checked pets
When checking in your pet, there are specific requirements for their
kennel:
- Up to 40in x 27in x 30in or 102cm x 69cm x 76cm*
- *Largest acceptable kennel is a series 500 kennel. This kennel is
not accepted on the Boeing 737, the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (S80) or
American Eagle airplanes. Kennels checked on an MD-80 must be able to fit
through the cargo door whilst in an upright position.
The kennel cannot:
- Be more than 100lbs/45kg (including the pet and other content)
United's website sucks. their information on kennels (they sell at
airport too):
400
36 L x 24 W x 26 H
24
$145
All United aircraft*
500
40 L x 27 W x 30 H
32
$160
All United aircraft*
700
48 L x 32 W x 35 H
51
$250
All United aircraft*, except Boeing 737
*Kennel acceptance guidelines noted above apply to United aircraft.
Limitations may apply for travel on United Express® flights. The #400
series is the largest kennel size accepted on United Express aircraft, and
not all United Express aircraft are able to accommodate pet kennels. Please
call United PetSafe at 1-800-575-3335 to verify availability.
*Kennel sizing chart for dogs and cats*
*A* = Length of animal from nose to root of tail
*B* = Height from ground to elbow joint
*C* = Width across shoulders
*D* = Height of animal in a natural standing position from the top of the
head or the ear tip, whichever is higher. Note: your pet's head or ear
tips, whichever is higher, must not touch the top of the crate.
*How to determine kennel size*
*For travel within the 50 United States and Puerto Rico:*
Length = A + ½B
Width = C x 2
Height = D
I guess anyone who wants to fly just about to give up and trade in
their frequent flyer miles for an AAA card instead!

dogs on flights. ask jimmy he flew out of buffalo for years with many size
dogs. i live 2 hours away from the hub airports so i drive at both ends of
the flight. fight the traffic but i get there with dogs and bitches. any
good travel agent can make those arrangements for you.
