A few facts...
"Pit Bull" is not a breed, it is a term used to describe at least three
different breeds with similar characteristics...
American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT)
American Staffordshire Terrier (AMSTAFF)
Staffordshire Bull Terrier (STAFFY)
For hundreds of years Pit Bulls were bred to fight - first as "bull
baiting", hence the name, and then to fight dogs. Certain traits were bred
into the bloodlines for that purpose: high pain tolerance, high prey drive,
etc (sound familar??). However, a quality that was NEVER bred into Pit Bulls
was HUMAN aggression. Human aggressive dogs were in fact undesirable as
these dogs required extensive handling prior to and during their fights AND
most of these dogs were also family pets, so no human aggression was ever
tolerated.
Pit Bulls are very athletic and many excel in positive sporting events such
as Agility, Flyball, Obedience, Weight Pulls, etc. Many, many work as
Registered Therapy Dogs and even Search and Rescue dogs.
In 2005 the American Temperament Testing Society statistics listed that
APBTs, AMSTAFFs and Rottweilers were ALL in the 83 percentile, meaning 80+%
of the dogs tested passed the temperament test. That is a very high
percentage, especially when compared to breeds which are commonly known as
"family" dogs, such as, Australian Shepherds 80% and Collies, which tested
at 79%, Chihuahuas at 71%, Cocker Spaniels, 81% and Lhasas at 69%.
