Yes, Amy...I remember the discussion about this med, just couldn't
be sure what list it was. Since many of us are on several lists, and
information can overlap,
I thought it was a good idea to send this info.
I had a dog on Metacam a year ago because he got something stuck
right into his eye...the eye specialist thought he might lose his eye
(actually he was pretty sure he'd lose it).......and to help with the
inflammation, we used the Metacam. Only for the minimum time and only
as directed...and the dog didn't lose his eye. But before I give any
meds to any dog, I question the vet like mad..."What's it for? What
does it do exactly? How exact must I be with dosage?" And the like...I
don't take much in the way of medication and I sure don't like giving
it.......one of the girls here was badly bitten this spring and AGAIN,
because this is Richmond, off we went to a different vet....he
prescribed Rimadyl. It took him about 20 minutes to convince me I had
to use it...but again, not for long.
I find more and more that people are very familiar with the names
and possible uses of various meds, and they self-prescribe at every
opportunity. I guess it's OK if they want to give themselves meds, but
I believe people need to be very careful what they do to their dogs.
Most of us are not trained to do this, and when you hear that vets don't
always know enough about the stuff they're giving our dogs, I don't know
how people dare to do it, either.
