Earlier today Anja posted about some states deciding to insert RFID chips in drivers' licenses. I commented in response that "smart tags" already provide tracking ability. For those who care, here's some more information about how individuals are being tracked ... and identified...altho I'm not sure who exactly it is who wants to track us............. They are currently in use in the micro chips we use in our dogs. They have been around since 1969 and powered when awakened by the radio signal sent from the transceivers or readers which work within a few inches and/or several feet away. The chips respond by transmitting their unique ID code. In addition to the "smart tags," or "EZ passes," whichever name your part of the country uses for those things.. They are also found in some of those gas pump "speed passes". Some of the airlines use them to tag bags to ensure against loss, which tells me they don't work all to well in that area. Some are used to track the big containers that come into the shipping ports and to help the DOD trace military supply shipments. Visa is combining them with smart cards so people can conduct transactions without having to use real money. Surely you've seen the ads on tv where someone is buying coffee or something and everything is going great until someone pulls out their checkbook. Michelin is going to put these tags in their tires to help identify cars/parts in the event of a crime. Gillette, Home Depot, The Gap, Proctor & Gamble, Prada, Target, and Wal- Mart use them to manage everything in their supply chains from manufacturing to shipping to stocking the shelves. Think of these organizations of being able to point the RFID reader at a million sealed boxes and know exactly how many "what ifs" are in them without having to unpack, handle or run them through a barcode scanner. Some are just tagging the packages but they may begin to tag their products as well. Other potential uses as already mentioned are the drivers license but also the potential for passports, birth certificates, professional degrees and licenses associated with, i.e. medical or any type of document where authenticity is of utmost importance. Then there's the potential to "micro chip" people, i.e. Alzheimer patients with the potential to wander away. It can be crushed, punctured, or microwaved but not ruined by water or demagnetized. The consensus is Congress should be required to notify consumers about products with the embedded RFID tags and have the capability to disable it on privately owned property. Probably more info than you cared to know but "Big Brother" is already here...
