>Breeding Merle to anything but Tri causes fatal genes. Dead pups or = serious=20 >deformities every time. In shelties, my "other" breed, a double merle mostly white and is likely = to be blind and/or deaf. The double merle (or homozygous white) in the = right hands, has proven to be valuable in blue merle breeding programs. = In shelties, more than 50% white is severly penalized in the breed ring = (it is allowed in collies). IMO, that was done to discourage merle to = merle breedings. The color headed white (white body, colored head) is a = perfectly normal animal without color associated health problems. The = white gene is recessive, and, when breeding a white-factored dog to = another white-factored animal, you will get color-headed whites (much like = we get black animals when breeding two black and tan animals who are = black-factored). There is a faction in shelties that would very much like = to allow color-headed white shelties to compete in the breed ring. BTW, = you can usually tell a white-factored sheltie by whether or not the white = on the rear hocks continues, uninterrupted by another color, to the belly = of the animal.
