I wouldn't exactly say "pig out" thank you very much.. but most any
nutritionist will tell you that eating a meal after 7 PM is NOT conducive to
weight loss.
I can only go by experience (20 + years of it with dogs) and that is that dogs
that are hard to keep weight on do better if fed at night..
Of course, I am not a personal trainer for anyone, so what do I know??

Speaking from my experience as a personal trainer for natural body builders ,
this assumption is incorrect as his body , will then run out of fuel for
'IMMEDIATE' demand created by his obsessive constant running during the day
......... A human or dog's body that senses starvation goes to the easiest
source of fuel for energy which is muscle protein , ((although not true
muscle includes organs like the heart etc )) , which his body is `already`
scavenging.
HE needs REAL protein ! ( and not this denatured , useless, cooked,
sterilized, dried, ground, preserved , useless cr*p that comes in a bag.)
Mother Nature raw fed cats and dogs for a million years before kibble was
invented.
btw The 'overnight' weight gain you speak of could just be the bulk *for a
better word* that stayed in your body from the late night pig out and the
fluid build up retained because of the salt and sugars (carbs) contained in
the meal.

how are you feeding him?? I find that dogs that are like this are the ones
that are fed twice a day, and then run/work off a lot of energy/calories
throughout the day..
Switching to feeding once, at night before bed.. often does the trick.. (you
know what happens when you eat large late at night and then go to bed?? put
on the pounds is what!)
you may need to add a digestive supplement as well for awhile..
