Kathy, I don't think you're over the top at all. Our water supply can
become contaminated by all sorts of things. This is a big concern in
environmental circles. Just Google, "groundwater contamination." If these
contaminates can harm humans, they sure as heck can harm animals as well.
The Vet School vets felt that the problems with our two dogs who died were
highly unusual and most likely caused by some environmental factor. One
dogwas a GSD and the other was a different breed, so no common ancestors in
the first umpteen generations. My own case was deemed "complicated and
interesting," and I'm not related to the dogs. <G>
While I do believe that most of the issues in the Breed today are
hereditary,I also believe that the environment may play some role in the
development of some of the problems.

Several years ago, we bought a new house that was built on old farm
land. Periodically, we would get red clay dirt in the water. Two of
our dogs died of problems related to the gall bladder and pancreas. I
was afflicted with the same problems myself.
I've always wondered if the our ground water was contaminated with the
fertilizers that were used on the property year after year. Could this
have caused the digestive problems in the dogs and myself?
At one time, I was interested in conducting a survey regarding dogs on
well water. I'm not an environmental engineer, but we do have one in
the family. Does anyone think that the well water thing is worth exploring?
