If people start entering their coats in the regular classes (uncut)and the rest of the fancy refrains from their comments such as "Don't waste your time or money since they are never put up", then they will be judged as they should be .... to the Standard. I am sure that if "Specialty" judges start putting up coats (if they are the best one there on that day) the All Breed judges will follow. No need for a special class or further education. If there was a special class for coats what would be next? Special classes for light eyes or ring-tails as Carol mentioned? Or how about classes for ears that had a bad tape job and are now touching in the middle or the gay tail that is now a dead tail? As it stands, there are dogs that have serious faults that are being shown and are put up from the regular classes. So in conclusion ..... if the dog doesn't have a disqualifying fault it can be shown in any regular class. The choice is yours. Only you can decide if you have the resources to continue to show such a dog and which judges should you show under. And when all is said and done, do you really feel this dog belongs in a breeding program? Since this is what conformation's objective is suppose to be about, isn't it? We should not focus on, or consider any fault as being 'special' enough for it's own class. Logic asks what were the other reasons. And why do we feel it necessary  to make yet another class for a single aspect of our breed? History indicates that when ever we have  made a class for a single aspect of our breed it has failed.  From: Ileana <inquestgsd@xxxxxxx>Sherree is correct. Any trimming, coloring, surgically fixing ears,  tails or any other parts if the dogs bodies. Now, if we could get all judges apply and comply Ileana  On Oct 16, 2012, at 1:53 PM, Sheree Moses <shereemosesgsd@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:>  > One of the reasons the parent club had the long coat class at the Nationals this year was to address the issue that many judges, esp. at all breeds, think that long coat is, at best, a serious fault, or at worst, a DQ. It is and always has been acceptable to show longcoats at both all breeds and specialties, the problem is that even the milk man can recognize a long coat, evidently more easily than they can discern faults of coat, such as a silky, open, non-weather resistant coat, or any other faults for that matter. Clearly we need better judges' education. We included a longcoat in this year's presentation with the understanding that as long as the coat was weather resistant it was only a fault, not "serious" or "very serious" and the animal should be considered on it's merits. What makes a longcoat a disqualification is if a person attempts to disguise the fact that it is long-coated by either trimming or pulling the hair to make it appear to be a "normal" coated dog.  > This has nothing to do with the standard, it is an AKC rule (I think it is Chapter 11, Section 8, rules applying to dog shows). Animals who have been altered by artificial means so as to disguise a fault are to be disqualified. This was the issue regarding the bitch who was shown the last couple of years, because she had been trimmed. Sheree                       ***********************************  support the long coat class for several reasons, one of which is that I hoped it would give greater visibility to these dogs and get people talking about why very few exhibitors even attempt to show them. I agree that judges, and others, need to be better educated on the issue. Hopefully, the discussion on the list and at the show has furthered that understanding. I am thrilled that our girl, Oak Ridge Fire Opal, won the bitch class. After being ignored every time she had been shown previously, she received recognition. I wish there had been more entries, though. Iâ??m hoping specialty clubs will offer these classes to encourage more to show their coated GSDâ??s. I donâ??t think these special classes should be offered indefinitely, but they offer long coats needed exposure and success. My hope is that this will lead to greater acceptance in the regular classes.  Carrie  Oak Ridge German Shepherds  Signers: G.S.D.C.A.
