Hmmm . . . I donât handle the long-coats more than the short coats. I just stare at the long-coats more. And yes, I DO think long coats always have better temperament than the shorter coats, everyone knows that ! There are a bunch of folks that believe that long coats make the best obedience dogs. They firmly believe that they have the best temperament. My theory is that as young pups every time you walk by the whelping box and you think it might be a long coat you pick it up rub the body then rub their little faces loooking for the extra hair. You look between the toes you look every where because you know it is the best puppy in the litter if it isn't coat :0) Long story short we handle them more. Thatâs really funny. I know some people will say âOh, the coats are the first to go â they are SOO cuteâ â I disagree â I hate having to make excuses for puppies. I think sometimes people donât really tell puppy buyers what a long-coat is â Iâve heard some say: âOh, itâs a plush coatâ And of course they are cute and fuzzy, so they are sold ! Maybe I should try that tactic the next time I have a coat. Once upon a time I had a litter by my Champion Jesse and bred him to the lovely Kazzie which I knew carried the long coat factor. I was thrilled when at 3 weeks none of them looked like coats, they all looked the same. As it turned out I couldn't tell the coats from the normal coated ones because they were all coats :0) Of coarse it was a large litter and in the Pacific Northwest they are a hard sell because they aren't water proof. They all got good homes but it was work. I can darn near pick them out at birth most of the time as they feel soapy. But by 3 weeks I m with you on the faces. Easy to see as their faces grow. Congrats on your normal coated litter Terry From: Iza Ackerman <izaackerman@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, January 8, 2013 11:21 AM Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] long coat or not long coat ??? I was SOOOO thrilled yesterday when I realized that none of my Woodsideâs Megabucks puppies were long-coated. I can tell best at about 3 weeks of age; after that, they donât look so coated sometimes. I can look into a box of puppies all sitting there ever so cute looking up at me, and can immediately spot the coats ! They have that âschnauzerâ muzzle. I hopefully speculated that the mother didnât carry for coat (a MVX CH Liberia daughter) â sheâs had one litter before to a male that carried coat, and there were no long coats in that litter; plus I wouldnât call her a âdryâ bitch, but just not quite as plush-coated as others. So . . . YEA !!!! â I have FIVE normal-coated puppy bitches to choose from, and the one male in the litter (poor kid) I am sure will be a keeper for a while. How does everyone else spot the long-coats and at what age ? Thanks for reading as I sit here in sunny (but not warm) West Virginia â people keep asking me did I move here from New Jersey because I thought it would be warmer ? No â actually the weather here is very much like New Jersey, except for in the summer time when it is a bit âcoolerâ here, with no New Jersey pollution. YEA !
