Nose lip crud was dry, firm& brownish...it looks like the dog had been sticking his nose in dirt. Only that it doesn't wash off. If left alone, nose lip crud doesn't seem to go away & the nose gets more crusty looking. Lip lip crud is dry, firm, 'scaley' bits attached to the lips/flews... on the lower one mainly, but somewhat on the upper, on the sides of the mouth, near the rear molars. Sort of like a thick layer of dried drool run amok. It doesn't seem to cause the dog any discomfort, they don't rub or scratch at it, but it looks fugly & feels creepy... like you can't wait to wash your hands... twice! My one dog usually ends up with dust bunnies or hair stuck into the lip crud, making it look & feel even yuckier. I don't usually treat the lip lip crud other than washing it off with a washcloth if it gets especially gross looking. Val suggested bag balm, which probably works well.
