There have been a number of posts regarding movement pictures
and what constitutes good movement. One important aspect of
movement that no one mentions is balance. Many breeds are using
movement pictures in their adds these days, and in some balance
is easier to see. There is a picture in the latest Dogs in Review
of a weimaraner that, due to the light reflecting on his short
coat, shows the absolutely straight lines from the shoulder blade
to the pad and from the pelvis to the pad. If a line is drawn
with a straight edge through these bones it will intersect above
the middle of the back. The same will be true in a GS except that
due to the TRAD, there is more extension and the lines will intersect
closer to the back, while in other breeds it will be farther above
in varying degrees depending on the breed. If the dog is not balanced,
the intersection will not be over the middle of the back. If a dog
lifts, you cannot draw a straight line through those bones, same
in a dog that is locked in the hocks or does not follow through close
to the ground. I went to Sara's website of the Beaumont specialties
and futurity, and in her movement pictures there is an exceptional
opportunity to see movement that is good to excellent as well as
some not so good to really sad. You can see pasterns flipping up
(they should never go beyond the horizontal in any breed) and compare
them with those that stay straight; you can see locked hocks; you
can see balance and extension. Another plus for using this is that
when you see a picture that you want to study more closely, you can
click on it and it will bring up an enlargement.
Not preaching to the choir here; just offering a suggestion to
those who have been asking.
