In RESPONSE to Evan's question below! AKC DOESN"T care about puppy mills, as
long as the money comes in.
AND with the PAWS BILL it doesn't matter any way!
BECAUSE there will be people who have the money to start a facility to breed
puppies, that will be just like the factory farms for hogs, chickens, turkeys,
veal etc. etc. They will have their own incinerators to dispose of the "didn't
make it's" and probably won't hesitate to wring the neck on a bad producer
(those that only have one pup, for example!)

AS for registration, how many of you have sold pups where the people never
bothered registering the pup in their name. OR transferred ownership? Once
they have the USDA blessing there won't be a limit on how many pups they
produce. How will they know if the animal is healthy or what their mental
health is like? Will they have regular inspections, like the chicken farms,
maybe?

Wasn't there a law on the books about companies not being a monopoly? Like
what happened to Microsoft? awhile back. Isn't AKC operating like that now?
 Anja

I want to pose a question. It is only a question. And, do not mistake my
position, I am against PAWS, not as it is written, but as it might be enforced.

Now, the question.

What can the AKC do about a puppy mill, other than refuse to let them
register the puppies? This just forces the puppy mill to register with the
UKC, or
other registry that has no enforcement arm. The AKC has no way to stop a
puppy mill, as the law now stands.

PAWS will give the AKC a way to enforce the laws through the department of
agriculture. That may be why they are behind PAWS. The theory is not a bad
one, the terms of PAWS may be a problem, but not the purpose.
