This is a wonderful story and nice to see it in print.? But, it's something
that anyone in therapy work has experienced.? Therapy work is an awesome
experience, particularly for the owner.? The intuition these dogs have is
incredible.? My first therapy dog was my rescue GSD, Treasure.? This dog had so
much baggage that I did not think he would ever be a normal dog.? He went
beyond a normal dog.? I don't remember why I decided to do therapy work with
him.? Maybe because he was an "old soul" and had an uncanny ability to
communicate with humans.? Treasure had hip and back problems, so we
concentrated on retirement homes and dementia patients at hospitals.? Treasure
had his favorites and there are two incindents that made me cry.?
The first was at a dementia unit.? We visited a woman who was non-responsive
and bed-ridden.? We were making the rounds and the nurse told me that?the
patient?was really out of it and not to bother.? Treasure had another idea.? He
walked up and placed his head on her hand.? She started petting him and then
started talking.? She told us about the poodles she had growing up.? She told
story after story.? I have no idea if any of it was true but Treasure sure
brought up some memories.? As we were leaving, the nurse approached me, with
tears in her eyes.? She said this woman had never said anything other than
"yes" or "No" in response to questions.? WOW!
The second incident was in a retirement home.? There was an old guy named
Scottie.? He was from Scotland, of course.? He used to have GSD's for
sheepherding when he was a kid.? He and Treasure deeply bonded.? We visited
Scottie for almost a year.? Treasure always looked for him first.? One day, we
went for a visit and I found out that Scottie had passed away.? Treasure looked
and looked for him.? I had to pull Treasure from the facility for several
months.? He was so upset not to find his friend.? It makes me teary just to
remember these moments.? I miss Treasure so much.
Therpay work is so rewarding.? It is tearful and difficult at times.? But, to
see the response of the patients and the amazing ability of our dogs to read
and help people in need is something you will never forget.
