You describing how it used to be for you describes more than half of our
clients now. Many people feel just like you and want to be involved, going to
shows, grooming and doubling etc. That's perfectly fine for me! lol I don't
want to drive around with 20 or 30 dogs...EVER! ;) The handlers that do
that I do give credit to though...but it just isn't for me. We take a few
client's dogs because they prefer it like that...but many of them meet us at
the show and many want to be involved with grooming, doubling etc. Those
clients win just as much as the others too.

I think this is very interesting as I feel it is just the opposite. I think
years ago it was much easier on owners. Most of the handlers had day jobs
and only handled on the weekends. They did not breed them self's, and
either keep or sell to clients and then handle the dogs they sold, I do not
remember it almost being a requirement that the dog live with the handler.
I remember conditioning, grooming and doubling my own dog and not just
sending a check

Yes and other handler/breeders do that sort of thing too! Hey it is a
capalistic world...shop around if you think you are being cheated. My
handlers are open to my observations and listen to my opinions. But they
are really good at making sure I am showing a much better dog than I once
did. These younger ones handling now understand budgets and time
commitments and allow your input. Years ago this was never a consideration
and therefore your dog maybe didn't get handled unless you had a silent
co-owner or someone who had something else to throw in the pot for
"GOODWILL". Of course this is only my observations and opinions!
I think the economy has forced everyone to think outside the box these days.

I am not patting myself on the back here, just stating facts. Nick and I
own or co-own a couple of dogs. If one of those dogs wins points at a show,
any clients showing in that sex that day do not pay a dime. I know there
are a few handlers that do that...I think Bart always did, if I am not
mistaken.
We don't breed much at all , but we are in this sport because we love dogs.
So having 1 or 2 of our own keeps us involved from that aspect. When
possible we take our own dogs to big shows or Futurities that are away from
our area, so not to compete with our clients.

Jane , This is a handler breed and it is very expensive as you well know.
When a handler wins with their own dogs and their clients pay for them to do
it, I think that has put a lot of people out of this breed. There are very
few handlers that only handle for others. Most handle their own dogs and
breeding also and it's a win-win siutation for them. They get paid if they
win or lose I have known of some handlers that put their dogs in other
people's names also, even though they still own them and continue to show
them. This can leave a bad taste in people's mouths. I am making these

As Jeff indicates rightly, oft times handlers and their clients help to
build entries to make a major.....and they do so unselfishly, knowing that
they may not be awarded the points at a given show.
So also, some folks decide to pull their entry when they discover which
other dogs are entered
at a show. Not often, but sometimes.
Additionally, if a handler chooses not to go to a specific series of shows,
it means that most of his clients will not go either. This diminishes the
numbers of entries because:
Where a handler goes, his string of clients usually go.
Sometimes, but not very often, a client may choose to hire another handler
and go to the shows anyway.
(Provided the other handlers have not already booked their own steady
clients or have the classes filled because they have built the entry to make
the major. A handler is not usually willing to take another handler's
client/dog instead of his own client's dog if the choice has to be made.)
And sometimes the handler has his own breeding program to
advance............... so he/she is currently campaigning his/her own dogs
or those dogs in which he has an invested interest.
And almost everyone involved, because of expense and other numerous reasons,
do not enter shows randomly.
Clients usually enter because they believe they have a reasonable
opportunity to win the points.
Otherwise, they sometimes think, why go if not to win the points. It is too
expensive to just "give the dog ring experience" most of the time.
There are other reasons, of course, why entries are low.
What do you suppose these other reasons might be?

Oh...and I forgot to add that the major show in Cleveland last weekend, Nick
& I showed like 13 dogs that day to help build a major.....we did not get a
major. Others did. So it had nothing to do with us getting others to enter
so that we would benefit from it. There are people out there that do not do
everything selfishly. We could have gotten one of the majors and that would
have been great...would have finished one of a couple of the dogs we showed.
It didn't happen though and we are thrilled for the winner's. They were nice
dogs too. It could have gone either way and next time if karma is on our
side, maybe it will go our way. :)

shows.
Yes, sometimes we have to build them, but good judges usually bring a major
entry. I find that often majors are built by handlers that do well under
certain
judges at the all breeds, not that the judges are always good. There are
some
good all breed judges out there though. They are crossing over in fewer and
fewer shows, mostly at the all breeds. I did go WB at one specialty this
fall
though and it was one point in dogs and the judge didn't cross ove rfor the
major, which is a rareity. . A few years ago I was at a specialty and it was
two in dogs and four in bitches and a well known judge was judging. In breed
he
gave the bitch BOW and well known handler of WD said out loud, but it's not
a
major for the dog. The judge then said, Oh I mean the dog is BOW. That would
never happen at an all breed. JMO Ann
