[ SHOWGSD-L ] insurance and being sued...

I work for a non-profit university and have been sued for letting an
employee go for embezzlement. Unfortunately, when the case went to
court a couple of years later, an ADA who got the case on Friday had to
argue the case on Monday and was not prepared. The former employee's
lawyer, however, was thoroughly prepared, so the state lost its case.
That resulted in my employee and a number of employees being sued for
slander and liable. While it was a pain in the neck and cost me some
time and incovenience, it didn't cost me any money at all. The case was
eventally ettled by our insurance carrier as it was cheaper to pay off
the employee than it was to litigate the case.
I am also on the board of another non-profit, the local humane society
(a sizable organization that serves 20+ local communities). The state
seized mis-treated, undernourished animals from a hoarder (with mental
health issues) which we housed and later legally placed. The owner of
the animals wrote her own complaint against us, our employees, the
state, our vet, etc. That suit is on-going but our insurance is
covering us without a problem. That's what insurance is for...
After the first incident, I obtained an umbrella policy (about $100 per
year) to give myself additional liability coverage. I never used it,
but my policy was not renewed several years ago because I answered their
questionaire honestly and disclosed that I had a number of German
Shepherds. I have been unable to obtain an umbrella policy from any
insurance company since. That may also be a problem for members of our
board with dogs.
