Cheryl, you said the magic word.........bonding. It is a lot tougher for the abused animal to regain any trust and devotion to someone, and it all comes from bonding. Very difficult to bond if the dog is basically separated from you all the time. Have taken 4 dogs back I bred over the years that the situation was not ideal for them, and yes 2 had been abused. If I had put them outside to stay they never would have regained their confidence, and that is with them still remembering me. Have purchased dogs 5mths to a year old, and even with them when they certainly have not come from bad situations, it just takes a little longer getting them tuned to you...and it doesn't happen when they are outside all the time. We each have our own way, and I know people that their dogs are outside all the time, but I guess, it is just not for me, and I am pleased to know rescue feels the same.
