I worry too Stormy. If I have a winter litter I use 2-3 oscillating
ceramic heaters, outside of the puppy pen w/ heating pads under the sterilon
that lines the whelping box. I also put inexpensive thermometers zip stripped
to the puppy pen at different heights so that I can double check temps at
a glance.

and starting fires. I DID use one before I learned of that, but had
JIm put a screen over the end, so if it did burst, the shards would
fall on the screen. I still worried a lot (Had a November litter.)
I am now using an oil filled radiator type space heater that turned
off if tipped for my adult dogs in their area. It warms up within
10-15 feet in the cold garage, thermostat controlled to go on if the
area is below 45º, and I have it OUTSIDE their area just in case.
Too many stories of fires and I'm a real worry wart. And I KNOW that
these dogs can handle temperatures MUCH lower that 45º, but I also am
a dog spoiler:-) :-)
