I'm a little late in posting on this, but felt I had to respond. This is
about the billboard that Mainline Rescue put on the Pa. turnpike in
Lancaster County. I have the dubious distinction of living in Lancaster
county along side those Amish and Mennonite puppy farmers.
I'm afraid that billboard was a huge waste of money for the rescue. The
only people they are going to hurt is the true dog fancier, such is on this
list, by asking people not to buy puppies from anyone with a 717 area code.
Most puppy mill puppies are sold wholesale across state lines I might add.
The rescue cannot touch those puppy farmers in any way since to do so would
be interfering with interstate trade. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like
the puppy farmers either, but the rescue would have gotten farther by asking
people to insist that Pa. state dog law follow up on investigations and
prosecute when possible. As for the 717 area code...chances are if its a
Amish or Mennonite advertising puppies he is giving out a cell phone number.
They use cell phones since there is no listing in a phone book (so the
church Bishop won't know!) Its easy enough to get a cell number that has a
Philly area code.
Besides all this...We have a local puppy mill that has been raided and
shut down every couple of years. It goes by the name of Puppy Love Kennel
and is operated by Joyce Stoltzfus (who is not Amish, despite the last
name). Now, this kennel has received copious amounts of press coverage from
people with pitiful sick little dogs to raids in the middle of the night.
The last time she was raided she had to pay over $30,000 in fines (you read
that right). Now, you would think people wouldn't buy from her. Yet, every
other year she's in the paper again with the state attorney general
investigating because of all the complaints from people who bought sick or
dying puppies. The AKC has suspended her privileges. She just registers the
pups with her kids names and I'm sure by now she is using the odd ball
registries (like ACA) since most of the puppy farmers are too. Which is why
the AKC can't do anything about puppy mills, they just drop AKC
registration.
The back lash from Lancaster County resisdents against Viacom (the
billboard advertiser) is likely to earn the rescue some very poor publicity
as well. JMO, SueT
