loved your post about Hawaii. But I have one correction. $700k in CA is now a
starter home, not a mini-mansion, LOL!

Well, all I can say to that is the price of a home doesnt always coincide with
the price of a puppy....I grew up in Hawaii, and they pretty much top the list
as a whole for cost of homes and cost of living...(they are listed as #4 for
Honolulu, which includes the whole island of Oahu, and #2 in cost of living,
again for the whole island, as opposed to CA which ranks high for some areas,
but varies greatly throughout the state, some cities being at the top, some
much
lower.) and we never got 1500 for a pet puppy! I moved out here to central NY
in
93, and I think puppies were going for like 400-600 at the time...and I do not
believe it is too much higher now from taking with my friends still
there...just
checked the local paper and saw one litter for 700 and one male puppy listed
for
1300...mind you a 1200 sq' 3 br/1 bath home with less than 1/4 acre on the
average sells for 500k (single walled construction,no basement, no attic,no
heat, no a/c usually!...at least in CA if you
pay 700k for a house it is a small mansion!) but the average salary in HI is
not much higher than the US average...about 51k a year....which is only 8k more
than the national median...not a proportionately higher salary when your
mortgage is $3000 a month! So in Hawaii, people most people can't afford to pay
big $$ for a pet puppy....they are too busy paying bills and buying food for
their family! But the cost of raising a good litter is at least twice as high
in
HI, what with the cost of dog food being way higher because of shipping, vet
care is off the charts, and just to get a good dog you often have to bring one
in from the mainland ($$$$), pay $500 in shipping, then pay quarantine fees of
around $1000(which even though they recently changed it from 4 months to one
month if you go through a series of shots before coming, the cost of the
quarantine stayed the same!) and then if you want to breed to a top stud
($500-$600), you would have to either ship your bitch out and b
ack (another $1000 r/t), or do chilled or frozen semen....all to sell your
pets
for $500-$1000 if you are very lucky!! Thats not even including the cost and
trouble of finishing a dog, when there only are like 10 all breed shows and 2
specialties a year! The people there who breed the good dogs (Pat Ayers, Hank
Fujita) are not even breaking even, even if all goes well and you have no
problems, they just have the $$ to do what it takes to get good lines for
themselves. But the average person could not afford to breed good show dogs
there, and forget about even trying to have the dogs pay their own way lol!
(and
people keep asking me why I dont want to move back there! HHmmmmm)

I have news for you Jerseyites...when you think of high-priced homes
most people will think of California -- with good reason. Five of the
top 10 highest-priced markets for existing single-family homes are in

Washington, DC ranks 4th, and New Jersey only 6th...New York 8th,
Virginia only 19th....these rankings are separated by tiny percentages
(except for California)......and most of Virginia, for example, other
than the Route 95 corridor, is quite rural.........
and our vet care costs here in Richmond are more than twice as
high as in Northern Virginia...which is the area that boosts the cost of
living for the whole state.
So everybody can stop crying..............since incomes are
higher where the cost of living is higher, too.............!
