Often, when a herding dog
is sent out to bring in the sheep, the guardian dog comes along with the
flock
as a "member". Of course, you have to be very careful with that and the
guardian dog must know the dog that is herding! In South Carolina, we used
an
Anatolian Shepherd who was fantastic. I also have friends that have used
Great Pyrenees & Maremmas. I also know other people that have llamas as
guardians and a couple of people that have used donkeys. I have never met
a Russian
Ovtcharka nor do I personally know anyone that actually uses them as a
flock
guardian, but from the sounds of it and the breed description, I imagine
they would be good, too!

Hi Julie!!!

Our Ovtcharka's breeder uses them actively on her Montana ranch (5,000
acres) to guard flocks. For herding they have Border Collies. It is a very
interesting dynamic to watch the relationship between the two types of dogs.
Another lady uses them to protect her show Huskies from Mtn Lion predation,
and it
works.

The herding dogs working and moving the herd , assisting the owner..and the
Guardian breed with "I have everyone's back" they do indeed live amongst
the herd, starting as very young puppies. Their SOLE purpose (as you know ,
owning an Anatolian) is to GUARD the herd, the territory, the owner. They will
even protect the unfortunate orphaned and weak until help arrives to take
over. This is not only in relation to the flock , but anything/anyone "owned"
by the breeds....including children, baby birds, deer. I think it is why for
all of "Sezja's" size and ferocity in protecting our place, and me out on
runs...that she is SUPREMELY gentle with Kaitlyn...she seems to understand
that
Kaitlyn is the weakest lamb of our "flock"
