Well, I absolutely agree with waiting until after the first heat for a
working dog. Those extra hormones definitely help the brain mature. I've
trained assistance dogs for many years and I've seen this in practice over
and over. Over the years I've noticed a pattern with bitches and thier
cycles.
1). They get "barky"...bark all the time and at anything
This means they are coming in.
2). First timer's get screwy. I have a first timer in right now and she has
taken up screaming. Never did this before, but now she screams when she
first see's me and no amount of yelling stops it.
3) I've had a couple of bitches over the years that never returned to thier
normal behavior after the heat cycle and yes they did get agressive, one
was a GSD and the other a Lab I had here for training.
