[ SHOWGSD-L ] heart/gsd/sudden death

There's something recessive in Portuguese Water Dogs like that, never heard  
of something SPECIFIC to GSDs, BUT, there are numerous things that CAN  happen 
with hearts in puppies in general....(SAS, PDA, PRAA, etc.)
 
Is this one you sold/placed and was she vet checked prior to sale/placement  
by you or shortly after by the owners?  If she had an issue severe enough  to 
be dead at 7 months, I'd have expected a competent vet to pick that  up.

YES there is a problem in the breed. i heard of a couple of dogs dying from 
this before 10 months of age. this was several years ago. it is similar to SIDS 
in infants. the heart races at sleep and while under anesthesia and is normal 
while awake from what i understand.

no kathy, a vet cannot pick this up in a routine exam. both dogs in different 
states were vet checked and one was vet checked before the anesthesia of which 
she died under.

cornell has compiled pedigrees of GSDs with this condition. the only thing they 
would reveal was Lance of Fran Jo was in every pedigree. that doesn't tell a 
thing. that's like saying Quando Arminius was behind all the dogs. you see? 
what about dogs behind Lance? how far back did their pedigrees go? in short i 
doubt they can track it by pedigree, but the study is most definitely on the 
GSD.
they may have others, i suppose they do.
