HMF posted some excellent info. My I add some more food for thought?
Profit for profit sake in a non profit should not be a goal. Profit
(retained positive income) is a proper goal when there are sound reasons for
the
business strategy. Yes, we are a small business that must operate with
sensible
plans, objectives, goals and strategies.
Having served as treasurer for the past 7 years, I tried to keep the above
in clear focus.
We have a strategic focus that Lew has pointed out that must be clearly
understood.
We are hosting the WUSV WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in 2013. That is 5 years from
now and as any good business this year is the year for a 5 year strategic plan
that culminates with the GSDCA on the World Stage. We are not hosting a
National that attracts a few hundred dogs from across the US and some from
Canada
but rather we will see dogs from all over the world. The audience
participation will be significant. This is not a small undertaking, and from a
financial
perspective we need to be ready to prove to the business world and the WUSV
that we are financially able to support the many aspects of this undertaking.
My SWAG (I don't have enough information to create a SWIG) is that we need
to have close to $50 K (possibly 20% more due to the economy) in a specified
reserve account by COB 2010. In my opinion, based on current agreements, the
Purina account is not available for this reserve.
We need to maintain our strong financial position so the hotels, arenas,
caterers, sod suppliers, catalog printers etc. view us a viable entity to
contract with for the many show venues that will be presented.
We also need to maintain our strong financial condition to insure that we
are a financially sound organization under the recently enacted Sarbain's (sp)
legislation to insure our annual audit by Rhea & Ivy is as clean as a
whistle. The businesses we contract with will want to see our audited
financials
before they commit to us as one of our suppliers.

At this time of the year,we all tend to look back over the past
year,wondering if we accomplished all we had intended to,and reflect on both

and low points . Unfortunately ,for our GSDCA ,2007 was it's worst year

the club was first founded. Between the Hunte fiasco,the inexcusable law
suit, and the frivolous charges made against President Lew Bunch and his

resigned. Then I happened to look the wonderful new GSDCA website. How could
our President Lew and the Board be charged with wrongdoing ,and
mismanagement
of our club , and still leave the GSDCA in the best financial condition
we've ever been in. Go check that Bottom Line. Look at those numbers!! In
2006,the club made $95,229--- the highest yearly profit in GSDCA History.!!
The 2007
books are not closed yet,nor audited,but a big profit is again expected.
Yes,bad mistakes were made,but obviously with no intent to deliberately harm
the GSDCA . We should be thankful that we had a strong B/F committee( Gary
Szymczak, as chair),and that committee chairs kept within their budgets. And
our
President Lew,getting additional funding from Purina,and Royal Canine. He
got
Royal Canine to support 25 of our regional clubs to enable the to have their
shows,and has a contract for to do the same for 35 clubs in 2008. And it
was our President that got Purina to sponsor our Nationals,and donate all
the
Futurity-Maturity trophies for the Regional clubs,saving them money. Lots of
good things occurred. Think about it - some of this group--the 2007 BOD ,all
of them volunteers ,are being sued,and charged with mismanagement of the
GSDCA--Absolutely absurd. Lets wipe the slate clean, start the new year
positively, and give our new Board a chance . Helen Miller Fisher
