[ SHOWGSD-L ] fronts, upper shoulder

While Amy has a point about the quality of photos, we are often stuck with just
photos to view dogs from areas we otherwise cannot get to. I picked my stud
from a picture in the Review, and Butch likes my bitch enough to allow the
breeding, if she comes in heat this century.
This discussion about the quality of fronts as compared to the Standard is
very timely. I got back into dogs after moving to Miami. I had not planned to
but I met a woman, Karen Isalgue, who invited me to the Miami specialty and I
got bitten by the show bug again.
I cannot say that I have fond many dogs that meet my criteria for fronts, and
this is where I start looking at a dog. If I do not see decent angles on the
front end, I don't look any further. If I see good front angulation, I look at
the rest of the dog.
Fronts have improved a great deal in the last 5 years. I find there are many
more dogs I can enjoy looking at now than there were when I started going to
shows again.
Having grown up in Jackie DeBernardo's kitchen and with many visits to
Lorriane Clifford's I got hooked on the picture of Orpha of Edgetown, from page
166 of the 1970 publication of THE COMPLETE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG by Bennett,
Denlinger, Paramoure, and Umlauff. She is my ideal dog, front and rear and
everything in between though I prefer darker dogs and sables.
Picture or not, it shows every angle of her structure due to her extreme
pregnancy during which the picture was taken.
I seek to breed another Orpha. I let you all know if I get one.
