This is an interesting take on the situation. And, have mixed feelings about
it. The Author states Sacramento County does not issue breeder's permits and
has no intention to do so. I'll bet there are many Cities/Counties out there
that also don't have that provision. But, fighting AB1634 from that standpoint
may bring on a bigger problem. Those same Cities/Counties may look at it from
an increased revenue standpoint and decide it's a good idea. Of course then
the cycle starts all over again. Do responsible breeders go underground? Do
you give up and stop breeding? Or do you leave the State? Hmmm. I would
think twice about using the argument of breeder's permits not being available.

This past weekend we displayed our dogs at the Sacramento Caledonia's
Clubs,
Scottish Games and Gathering of the Clans. We are always there, with
several other Scottish Dogs, cats, horses, sheep and cattle. I had the
opportunity to talk to a lot of people about the bill. I brought a flyer,
we made, with the assembly addresses and a sample letter. Several people
took copies, stunned that California was attempting to do this.
The most interesting person I spoke with was a gentleman who works at the
Sacramento Animal Control. After listening to me talk to a lady about the
bill, he came up and debated me over it. I asked him to look around the
Animal Glen and tell me the last time he saw any of the breeds of dogs
there, in the shelter. He admitted that he couldn't remember seeing any of
them. He admitted that we were not the problem. It was all the lab,
pitbull and shepherd mixes that make up 80% of their problems. He said he
himself has wondered what is going to happen when it goes through, and
litters of puppies and kittens start to get dumped. He lives in an area,
that use to be big on farming and now they are building a lot of houses.
He
sees coyotes, owls and hawks in the neighborhoods, as they have no where
else to go. He said he fears the abandoned animals will end up someones
meal.
I asked why, then were they making us pay the price for it. In the end,
he admitted that his director had made all staff members attend each
hearing
and support the bill. He said he would not go to the next meeting. I told
him, rather than not go, he should go and support us.
Something they haven't said to the breeders who think they are exempt, is
that, Yes you can get a breeders permit, IF (and that's a big IF), your
county issues them. Sacramento County never has and does not intend to do
so.
We have to stop sitting at our computers reading about what is being done
to stop this bill and do something. How long does it take to write and
send
an email?
