Quite Frankly it all depends on the judge. An example: Years ago I inadvertently entered by bitch in the wrong class, Am Bred instead of Open, for the Atlanta Kennel Club All Breed Show. . Jim was my handler he already had an Am Bred Bitch . After getting "what for" for the error I was put to the question. What the @#@!!!!!*#@ do you think we are going to do now"? . Well, I asked Joan Turner if I could borrow her tennis shoes cause I was going to take the bitch in myself. We stuffed tissues in the toes of Joan shoes cause they were waaaay to long . Entered ring with wrong clothes on and big, looked something like the clowns at the circus with big shoes, only thing missing was the big red nose. Won the class, went winners bitch. Judge liked my bitch, he was not intimidated by the handlers in the ring. of which there were several. Finished her that day. Sally Hayden gave this bitch her first major from 12 - 18 I have a great picture of that Sally, thanks a Lothario daughter. The very next day saw an All Breed judge give everything to the handler with poor dogs, she was so unsure. Picture of my win at the Atlanta KC is on my web site, it's old, I'll probably never remove it. LOVE THAT PICTURE The judge was Bill Whalen from CA. Just this past year Lenny went in the ring at the all breeds down in Brooksville FL with Sylvia McDaniel's nice young male. This young male went Breed from the Classes over Geneva with Jim. Again a Judge that had the confidence and the conviction he needed. I basically agree with the person, sorry don't remember who you were, that stated they talked to the all breed judges afterwards./ Perhaps we all need to become more involved and personal and personable with some of the AB judges. Looks like we will be having more all breeds with majors in the future. ----- Original Message ----- From: <grnram415@xxxxxxx> To: <pruett@xxxxxxxxx>; <Showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 2:15 PM Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: elitism and politics in the dog show ring... What you said is so true, especially in the AB ring.? Many of the AB handlers show several breeds under the same judges and they get to know each other quite well.? If a Judge is not well versed in a particular breed, they have no issue looking to a certain handler to bring them a quality dog.? Well, that handler may very well have the three-legged goat in the ring that day.? Case in point.??Several years ago, at a show I will not name and a Judge I will not name, Jimmy brought that 3-legged goat into the ring.? The Open Bitch class was 12 girls.? I do not want to offend the breeder/owner of this girl but she was not only Fugly, she couldn't move her way out of a paper bag.? The Judge moved us around and around, moving her up each time until she won the class.? Now, just so you don't think this is sour grapes, there were some gorgeous bitches in that ring.? My girl didn't have a prayer.? She gave up after the third or fourth time around, and she loves to show.? But, she was not a contender and I knew it.? What got me was that these gorgeous bitches were overlooked to move this?Fugly bitch to the front of the line.??It was obvious to all that this Judge looked at Jimmy to bring?her a quality animal.? No, she didn't take the Breed, but his Special did.? Hmmmm......?? I have no issue with any of the GOOD handlers bringing quality animals into the ring and getting beat by them.? I do have an issue when the 3-legged goat wins because of the handler's?reputation and the Judge's?lack of knowledge of the breed.?? I have decided that in the future, I will show mainly under breed judges at the AB shows.??They are harder to find but with many of the AB shows looking for better entries, they may decide to employ these breed judges to get majors.? There are some AB Judges that I like and will continue to show my dogs to them.? But, like everyone in this financial crisis, I will be very particular and not show just to show.??? I show my dogs in both rings. I have at home two animals that won their classes at the GSDCA national specialty AND have all-breed Group I's. Now - these are GSDCA national class wins and all-breed Group wins handled by Ariel - NOT Jimmy or Kent or Leslie or Lenny. So - we didn't win because of handler political connections - we won because these are darn nice dogs. There are politics in both rings and good and bad judges in both rings. But - you still can win with nice dogs both rings. I see good dogs in both rings - and I find that I can sort them out in a big or small ring. The truly correct GSD can handle a big or small ring and look good doing it. IMO - the politics in the all-breed ring - at least at the breed level - are not as bad as the politics and the shenanigans I see going on in our specialty rings.
