I don't know how we fix this - but if I'm close to throwing in the towel (and I'm pretty hard core) then just think how hard it is to attract and keep newcomers who will show our breed in the American specialty ring. ------------------------------------------- The answer to politics and to poor judging in general, is education. If a majority of exhibitors are true experts on the breed, poor judging will suffer. Whenever a lesser structured dog wins because it "outshowed" its competition, we accept that as part of the game. In fact, that is poor judging. Top handlers will always "outshow" everyone else. That is their job. That doesn't mean however, that the better shown dog should win. If there ever came a dog that was considered by all to be "the best dog in the country", should it lose if it is outshown? When the best shown dogs always win, the best handlers will win almost always. The result of that is something we already see ... handling fees that many people cannot afford. If the owner of the "best dog in the country" (imagined earlier in this post,) could not afford a top handler, the dog's chances of going GV will drop drastically. Its chances of going Select will also be lessened. Some may deny that, but it really is the world that we live in. A handler is in business to earn a living, so it would be counterproductive .. almost foolish... for them to show a dog for an owner who could not afford to pay what they can charge to show another dog. On the other hand, if the best dog usually wins, even if outshown, then the handler will have to consider his or her chances of winning, in order to continue to charge a premium price for their services. Breed education is the best possible solution to any breed problem, and always will be.
