I consider 'drive' to be the dogs desire to do whatever you ask, willing
to work, and try to please in every aspect of what you are asking of it.
They are interested and engaged in you and what you are doing...and happy
and willing, when you ask something of them. A desire to work and learn.
It is up to YOU to train the dog...but the dogs should have the mental and
physical strength AND desire to work and try to please you.
Some refer to it as "work ethic"....
To me...it is the "heart" and "drive" and "willingness" to please.
Sure...some dogs have more 'ball drive' or 'prey drive'...and they ALL have
a 'survival drive' and 'pack mentality' left to their own...but REAL
WORKING drive for us, is for the dog to have a desire to work for you.
To me, this is what sets them apart from most other Breeds. They are always
engaged, aware, watching and thinking....and capable of making very smart
decisions on their own. It is up to us to direct that.
Even in regards to a "show dog".....how often we see a dog with four or more
double handlers RUNNING around the ring trying to motivate the dog to go one
more time. Doesn't have to be a SchH dog or a 'Police Dog'.... REAL
working
drive would be willing to continue to go as long as you ask it to.......even
around the ring one more time. They definitely can get mentally bored, but
are still willing to try to please you....
That "HIGH intensity Drive"....can be what I call "over the top". These dogs
have so much high drive energy that they never really "settle" and never
willing to just lay at your feet while you relax when you choose to. These
dogs definitely should be in a "HIGH DRIVE TRAINING HOME".. <G>....where
the
owner needs and wants that. Most families do not want nor NEED a dog with
that kind of high drive. I sure don't....<G>

Yes Ms Acherman! This certainly is a big part developing DRIVE in dogs in
general and working/protection dogs in specific! Many working high drive
dogsare rewarded with balls or other chew toys when they successfully
complete their task! And I'm not just talking about bite work! High drive is
also needed to do scent work ( finding drugs,bombs, humans etc) I believe
high drive like many qualities in our dogs is an inherited thing! breeders
breed for this just like conformation folks breed for physical attributes

Belgium Malinois defiantly tend to have a higher drive than GSDs and they
areslightly smaller and a bit more agile! Thus more and more Police
departments as well as our military are leaning towards Mals.....I still
believe the GSD is smarter, easier to train and because of his size and
reputation more intimidating! Not trying to start a list fight ( I'm in
enough trouble with Stormy) but I wish our show dogs had a bit more drive!
take a look at Kathy and Ken Tanks Italian import ( forgot his name) or
Basu's Sable dog! Tremendous drive in both of those animals and both of
thosedogs are show dogs! The Martello dogs to me have great drive. Ed

Yesterday my husband Joe asked me to come into the living room to watch
something on TV that I would be interested in. They were interviewing a K-9
handler &his dog in the Phoenix area. And were going to demonstrate some
bite work, etc., with the handler's dog. To my disappointment the handler
had a Malinois. The reporter asked about the breed &of course I didn't like
what he had to say. "Oh yes, the Malinois are taking over because, they are
more square built, high drive, less HD in the breed, smaller, more agile for
doing what we ask of them." he proudly blurred out. Really cut the GSD breed
which was very disappointing for me to hear. I remember long ago when I was
going to watch a yearly trial with a GSD, Bart I bred &placed with a
long-time K-9 handler in Minneapolis. There was one Malinois that day
trialing as well I asked about. I remember Bart's handler saying, "Yup, I
think we're going to be seeing more of these Malinois coming into the PD.
But I have to say, the breed is crazy &the most of them out of control
without a strong handler at their side." At that time the whole Minneapolis
PD only had GSDs. And I was told that the greatest percentage of those dogs
were from the Humane Societies or donations. I know at this time our
Cottonwood PD pays $6,000 for their Malinois coming out of CA. I've been
told where those Malinois come from the dogs are confirmed to be of
greatness &if there are any problems having to go to court the kennel will
represent the dog &its handler.
