I assume you all have heard about the investigative reports that
appeared on WTMJ, Channel 4 (Milwaukee) that focused on "puppy
mills." This was a strategically planned media blitz by an AR group
from eastern WI so they could garner public support for a Pet
Facilities Bill. State legislators offices were flooded with calls
demanding that something be done. What the public wasn't told was
that 3 of the kennels they visited, under cover, are USDA licensed
and inspected. The public was lead to believe that Wisconsin does
not have laws that concern the conditions that were shown on the TV
report. In addition to the USDA standards, we do have state and
local animal neglect and abuse laws on the books, but the under cover
reporters and AR activists didn't report what they considered to be
deplorable conditions. The TV report was to convince people
that "all breeders are bad."

Representative Tom Lothian and Senator Alberta Darling are sponsors
of the latest PFL. There was a round table meeting in eastern WI,
the week before last and there will be one in Eau Claire on Monday
evening. Hopefully, one will be coming to a city near each of you.
The legislators have said that they want to hear from everyone, and
not just animal control people - they need to hear from breeders of
all kinds of dogs, because a one size fits all law won't work.

I was happy to hear that the Dog Federation of Wisconsin has
regrouped and is active again. In the last couple of weeks they met
and elected officers. The website is not functional yet, but it
should be soon.

It is believed that the bill was written yesterday. Things are
moving very quickly (perhaps in an attempt to slide it through and
vote it into law without too many people noticing) and the DFOW
members have been busy. The DFOW needs members, they need
volunteers and they need money to help with costs such as printing
and more importantly hiring a lobbyist to work on our behalf.
Please considering joining. If you are a member of a club, please
urge the club to join as well. I can supply that application as
needed. This is a way that all of us, no matter what breed we own,
can be supported.

Thanks!
Peggy
