Kathy’s suggestions are good, however there is one more “old fashion” drug I
would put him on, and that is Tylan.
An Internal specialty vet put an old dog of mine with intermittent loose stools
on it – of course they would not like the taste, so I had a compounding
pharmacy put it in capsules. The specialist recommended 2 capsules twice a
day, which didn’t seem to help, so I just gave the dog 3 capsules of the stuff
twice a day, which did the trick. And BTW, the dog was on it for a long time;
didn’t seem to harm her in anyway. I was actually surprised when this
specialist put her on it – I remember years ago when I had a boarding kennel,
some dogs came in for boarding that were on Tylan all their lives and the
owners would bring the “jug” of Tylan in with them.

First I would run a fasting cTLI test to check his scores. Under 2.5 is a
definitive diagnosis for EPI however many dogs struggle at a higher value and
we know pancreatic function can diminish with age. With symptoms of
reoccurring loose stools I would treat anything under a 6.
I really hate flagyl and won't use. Sounds like you are on a merry-go-round of
wiping out all of the good GI flora, then he comes off the med, then you get an
overgrowth, then he goes back on....IF I had to use anything it would be a
pinch (and I mean PINCH, 1/8 of a teaspoon) of tylan.
I would also have him on Cani Otic, much, much better than any other probitic
out there, it is sourced from dogs. (Google, you have to buy it on line from
KY). Really does a nice job. And no, I wouldn't be changing his food.

diarrhea. He has had his stool checked numerous times,and nothing shows up. He
has taken Fortiflora, Zypan to put in the good bacteria and still comes back.
He is on Ivomec for his heartworm and have also put him on the IBS diet to
control it. He will be good for about a week then back it comes. I have put
him on Flagyl to stop it, but he cannot live on that. I have also changed his
food to Science Diet for Sensitive stomachs and still it comes back.
Any thoughts? Would putting him on raw change it.
