I just had to comment on this...The AKC has itself in a royal mess . Its lost
its income base ( the puppy mills), the reputable people have lost faith in it,
and the public doesn't care who their new puppy is registered with as long as
its registered. The AKC delegate for the kennel club I belong to reports the
internal workings at the AKC is in upheaval, with people at each others throat.
Probably the only solid support it has is with the show people. But with
entries down across the board even that is dwindling. We've all been told the
AKC will support the battle against BSL and other restrictive dog laws and
unfortunately its the just about the only thing dog fanciers have until other
organizations get up and running. How long will we support the AKC if it drops
the ball on the BSL stuff? We already know it can't or won't protect us against
breeding restrictions. How long will we support the AKC if it can no longer
pick up the tab on dog show record-keeping? and lets talk about what we never
talk about anyway...the marketability of our purebred puppies. We feel its
distasteful to talk about this, but unfortunately it is something that we will
need to address sooner or later. Have you noticed how many other registries
there are now? Have you noticed all the hoopla for "designer dogs" ?...All at
our expense...as they put down the purebred. (anyone want a shepadoodle?) The
AKC had a chance when they enacted the DNA regulations to have AKC registered
dogs mean something. I'm afraid they might have lost their chance...and lastly,
I've said this before and I'll keep saying it...as long as any State dog law
and the USDA fail to address the size of the kennels that dogs are allowed to
be kept in, nothing will change because be it climate controlled or wire pens,
they can keep huge amounts of dogs in a small area. SueT
PS. for those who don't know....you can keep anydog 24/7 in an area that is 6
inches wider and long then the dogs length from chest point to base of tail.
So...most German Shepherds could live in an area about 40" by 40" all their
lives legally.
