I have been thrilled and humbled to have been able to lease bitches, (2
over all these years), their owners were terrific. A bitch is the treasure of
any breeding program, you don't need to keep a bunch of males, we have so
many options today, chilled, frozen etc.
The reason I was "humbled" was because if the shoe was on the other foot I
can't ever see me handing a gal I either bred or bought, grew out, waited
to see if she'd pass all of her health testing, maybe bred her once,
proven, great mommy and THEN entrusting her to anybody for breeding/whelping
etc.
(I'm a little anal about how dogs are kept, whelped, raised etc. OK,
MORE than a little anal). I'd sure skip seasons before I did that, and have,
many, many times.
Now if your question is from a contract standpoint, think of everything
that can go wrong and write something up agreeable to both parties. And that
is yet another reason I won't send a bitch, I know what CAN go wrong and
can throw the Amex on the front desk of the ER, not everybody can.
So I would say freeze your boy and in the meantime keep an eye out for
bloodlines that might complement, buy a youngster, grow her out, health test
etc. and in the meantime if somebody with a bitch you like wants to use him,
be there with your checkbook when evaluating puppies.
I just don't see too many people handing over a really nice bitch.
