I hope people are paying attention. In an earlier post, Barbara Amidon also
expressed concern over the state of the breed when she mentioned that we don't
see the quality that we did with Flair, Ironsides, etc... While Barbara and I
have disagreed on occasion, I will always give her credit for having one of
the best eyes for the breed. I'll also give all of you credit for producing
some of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen. However, in my opinion,
movement has suffered over the years ... particularly correct transmission.
There
are probably many reasons for that, but I believe that the most obvious is the
need for education.
During the election, I expressed my thoughts on the need for education within
the GSDCA to several potential board members. If you want to see an increase
of interest in the breed, and therefore an increase in numbers of members,
entries, you name it ... then the GSDCA should get aggressive in educating its
membership on various breeder subjects, the most important of which would be
the standard itself. There should be monthly articles in the Review for
educational purposes, submitted and funded by the education committee if need
be.
There should be educational seminars at every futurity, and a GSDCA sponsored
educational program should be available to any show giving club as a pre or
post
show event. Call it a GSDCA Mentor series if you like ... I'd wager that
there are many older students of the breed who would be honored to be asked to
help out.
