I have no idea about health issues.....I've known some with many health
issues....but so do
many dark dogs...<G>
Without getting into all the utility purposes for the Breed ( i.e. white dogs
at night for the Military,
and night time Police work, white Avalanche dogs hard to see, sheep having
problems identifying
a white dog pushing them....) Definitely no harm in many cases either.....
But the standard for most Breeds were put together for a purpose....and I
believe our Breed and
Standard to be one of the best.......else how would we have such a great and
versatile Breed in the
work field. I think we should ALWAYS keep our mind and eye and thinking
about this Breed on
their working dog status when we make decisions and not turn it into a color
classes breed for the
sake of more entries at a show!
I think the white restriction has saved our breed from all the experiments with
color combinations that
would or could take place .....for the pure purpose of marketing. i.e Panda
Shepherds, 'silver blues'
'champagne livers' etc..... I really believe the restrictions enforces some
control over the games some
would play for more dollars for something more rare.
By the same thinking....I think the same restrictions with the white GSD saves
them and their white dogs
from the same type of experimentation and marketing.....after all....they ARE
required to be pure white!!

Someone explain to me how the white GSD is going to be harmed by becoming it's
own special
and specific breed and acquiring it's own special admiration and status in the
dog world?? Many
involved with the whites prefer that anyway......
I honestly think those with the white GSD needs to really be sure they know
what they want and ask for
for the pure salvation of their own lines and breedings.....and color!
( in other words...it is not the white GSD I worry about so much......but the
'dollars'...er.... people planning
the breedings.<G> )

This is a great post Ken! The issue doesnt stop with just the white coat
either. There are plenty of people achieving great things and contributing to
the GSD breed with their "colored" dogs from whites. Personally, I have a
black and tan from a white that is an AKC and Can champion. Evan and Ann have
spoken of her in the past on here and can attest to her quality (sorry to put
you on the spot Evan and Ann) I know of other white factored dogs with AKC
champ points. There's a black and tan from a white that holds the record in
dock diving for GSDs. There's many that compete in rally and obedience
successfully. So whites do contribute to the GSD breed in more ways than many
of you even realize. If their colored offspring are able to be part of this
breed and be successful showing the versatility of the GSD breed, how can
their white parent be considered anything but a GSD? And why not give them
equal rights? Donna

Adding a color variety would not at all detract from the working aspects of the
breed. What it would do is increase participation and club membership. White
GSDs are just as capable working dogs as any other color.
We have at least three factions now (seriously, you know we do----specialty,
all breed, obedience, comeon), so
this is nothing new. What we need to do now is unite. We need to unite all
German Shepherds.
Our National should include all German Shepherds, American, German, and yes,
White GSDs.
Time has proven that there is no good reason to separate. It has not served us
