I agree about the new carpet. There can be some bad reactions to it. I have
also used the newspapaers, shredded papers and blankets. Don't use straw or
shavings til the pups get older. But, last couple litters I tried something
different. Astroturf. I found some cheap Astroturf at Home Depot. It gives
the pups traction, hard for them to bite off and ingest and the backing makes
it stay smooth so Mom doesn't bunch it up. I cut 3 chunks to fit the whelping
box so I could rotate them. I hosed it off with dish detergent and let is dry
in the sun for a couple days before it even went in the box. You can use
bleach on it if needed and it lasts a long time. It comes in big rolls so I
used the rest of it to make an outdoor play area for the pups. This way they
are not directly on the grass and dirt which may harbor coccidiosis or Giardia.
I don't know if Home Depot carries it every spring so I bought a bunch of
rolls last year, just in case I ever get to have pups again
:-) I love this stuff. I think I have some pics of it and the pups if anyone
wants to see it.

Carpet can be very dangerous if you don't know which chemical this carpet
has been treated with. It could be something the puppies would be highly
allergic to. I read all the different beddings you mentioned and have to
agree with you on most. No good. The only thing that I felt was best - for
me - was a quilt that I would pick up at a Thrift Shop or Salvation Army,
wash it several times, make sure you have at least 2, use one, wash one. I
would tape the corners of the quilt to the box wall with duct tape, just
underneath the ledge. It can be taken off and replaced fast and easily.
Has always worked for me.

I have been breeding dogs for over 30 years. I have used about any and every
thing you can think of. The shaving can get in their mouths and could choke
them or the very least be ingested. Newspapers flat are to slick and the
puppies
can not get traction to crawl. Shedded paper is not to bad but not my
bedding
of choice. I used hay and also straw at one point but the straw can scratch
the eyes or even blind them. I had one puppy that had a piece of hay go into
the mouth, migrated to the lining of the heart, became infected and died.
They
vet found it in the pocket around the heart and said he had never seen this
before. I don't like blankets because the mom can move them arouind, lose a
puppy, then lay on it. My bedding of choice is NEW carpet. The mom can see
the
babies nd babies have traction to crawl, and it is pretty easy to get and to
replace when soiled..Find someone who is a carpet layer and ask for any
small
remanents or end of rolls. I have a friend and also a neighbor who gives me
mass
amounts of carpet so I supply alot of my friends with carpets. I like to
spread the carpet and let it air out for a while, then I cut it to the
whelping box
size and store it. But this is just my opinion for what it is worth.
