Terry ,. This is a good point however, we must remember some of
the older dogs have bloated and have been tacked
And then lived to a ripe old age.

Are the members of the Thirteen
club listed anywhere on the PC website? I found applications but not the list
of dogs. That would be a great breeding tool if it were easy to access.
The proof is in the life span.

With all the early deaths and problems being experienced - why don't we have
a seminar/conference on healthy issues at the national as our educational
program?. We could probably earn $'s by making
it available to other breed clubs - or maybe some would go in with us to
pay for expenses of such a conference.
We have recently had seminars on how to get our bitches in whelp. Maybe
that
is putting the horse before the cart. I AM NOT SAYING reproductive
seminars
Aren't good or worthy BUT the time has come to face the fact that
we have serious problems in the breed & we need to know how to
breed away from them, BEFORE we put the dog and bitch together.
Once again, we have bred ourselves into a corner, history is repeating
itself.
It doesn't matter who the stud dog and brood bitch may be - one simply
cannot
continue to go back to the same well time after time, that action puts the
closely bred
and now dominant genetic pool in a position to reproduce itself. - that's OK
PROVIDED there is good health and longevity in the close breeding.
In-breeding and line breeding were needed at times within the breed,
especially
In the late 1800's early 1900's in order to establish breed type - same
with
other breeds.
Just my thoughts.

A very good idea that is over due! It would be nice if this could be done
somewhere in the middle of the country, or perhaps to have a yearly event
held in conjunction witht he National. The purpose would be not to preach
to the choir, but to get all breeders involved, including the backyard ones.
It would only benefit the GSD!
Just curious, why shouldn't they be using GSD's to sniff out
drugs? When
one of our daughters went to The Sugar Bowl as part of the school band the
police brought in a Dutch Shepherd to sniff the suitcases. We happened to
have a bitch in season at that time and it was amusing to watch the DS sniff
and sniff. He never alerted of course, but the police checked the
suitcase
and then asked who it belonged too. I told them we had a bitch in season at
home and admitted I was curious to see if thier dog would react to this
smell. They seemed suspicious of me until I remarked that he hadn't
forgotten his training, just took the time to check the "chick"
