I am hoping that the knowledgeable folks on this list can answer this. There should be one and a lot if not most of our dogs can and do win in either ring, but over the years, I have found the Specialty ring more forgiving of certain faults (rears, size, ears that wave hello as a dog goes by; these things can and do win when the rest of the package is correct which they wouldn't do quite so easily in the AB ring). Conversely, dogs with not a whole lot on either end can get lucky in the AB ring when they are cute and trained right (stand pretty and bait). But if you have balanced, correctly sized, well trained dogs who are clean coming and going and know your judges (phew, that's a mouthful!), you can win in either venue.
