[ SHOWGSD-L ] a temperment rant

This past weekend I went to KY to pick up a new-to-me dog, CH Windy Acres'
Hunka Burnin' Luv v J-lyn. He's come to me to learn to be a herding dog.
What an AWESOME temperament he has!
He's incredibly easy going, confident & comfortable in his own skin. The first
day I got to KY, we were working him with sheep. Imagine 3 crook wielding
strangers with a dog who knows no one, asking him to do things he doesn't
really know how to do. NOT A BIT SPOOKY, GOOFY, HESITANT OR SHY! He never left
us or the sheep, altho he was off leash and had a huge field he could've run
off in. Flirty Tervuren & Briard girls bouncing all over engaging him in play
at their first introduction. Here's a dog in a strange place, with strange
animals & strange people waving sticks around & he is behaving as if this
happened every day of his life.
I'm sure you've all seen dogs that when handed off to strangers pull at the
leash & try to scurry away. Or dogs that stretch out leaning to sniff a
friendly stranger, without the nerve to step forward. Or dogs so uncomfortable
in their surroundings that if a pin dropped they'd probably poop themselves or
rabid barking at strangers (people or dogs) as the unsure dog intimidates the
threats from coming closer. Dogs that if you looked them square in the eye
would feel threatened.
Temperament IS the dog. Without temperament, all you have is a pretty fur coat.
Please look at your dogs without the rose colored glasses when evaluating
temperament! GSDs should be comfortable & confident where ever they are with
who ever they are with. Don't sacrifice temperament for better anything....
nothing is worth more.
BTW, my new dog acted like he'd herded in a past life! I think he's going to
work out REAL well!
I'm imagining a dual CH herding/breed GSD! ;-)
