To me, one of the best, and most reliable, "tells" is the reaction of the
Puppies and the Parents to the prospective Puppy Buyer. I look for the
different behaviours and the "right" questions on the part of the Buyers, but
to me it is vital to see if the Puppy accepts THEM. I also rely heavily on the
reactions of the Parents.

The prospect is introduced to the Puppies, and I want to see how they react
to the Pups; if the buyer is not down on the floor palying with the Pups within
5 minutes, they aren't the right people. After they have gotten acquainted
with the Puppies, I bring the Parents into the room together. I want to see
how the Buyers will react to the full-grown dogs (you'd be amazed how many
first-time GSD prospects have little or no idea how big these dogs will be at
maturity), and more importantly, I want to see if the Parents accept the
buyers. I trust their instincts more than mine.

Case in Point: A couple of years ago a couple came to see our Puppies. They
talked a good game, but the man seemed somewhat awkward with the Pups, and they
didn't relate well to him. The Parents didn't like the guy at all, and they
were only lukewarm to the woman. I told them I didn't think it was a good
match and sent them away. I was leaning towards not selling them a Puppy, but
the Parents convinced me that there was something wrong. As it turned out,
there was PLENTY wrong: I did a little digging and found out that the man had
been in trouble for Animal Abuse and was a convicted Child Molester as well,
with info on him in the Sex Offender Registry online.

I trust my dogs with my life, so you can believe I trust their Instincts
completely.
