oh my friend our hearts are with you... jenn & paul -----Original Message----- From: EJDegen@xxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 04, 2012 2:37 PM To: showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Yankee Yankee Doodle Dog. PAM CH Caisson's Unconditional Surrender MX MXJ XF TD HSAs. August 1, 2005...April 4, 2012. Five weeks ago, the nightmare began. On February 29, Yankee was fine (running and playing ball) and was still actively training in herding and tracking. That evening before bed, he appeared to not feel well. We took him to the emergency room and we could find nothing wrong. The next day, I took him to the vet clinic where he started having neurological symptoms. We were referred to a neurologist and they took him in for an MRI almost immediately. The MRI showed what was suspected to be a cancerous tumor on his spine (T-12). They immediately took him into surgery and removed the suspected tumor which was more involved than it had appeared on the MRI. The surgery was rough and his spine was significantly bruised. They had to take all of the top of T-12 and half of T-13 as well as a significant amount of muscle on both sides. Four days after his surgery the biopsy results on the "tumor" were back. Much to everyone's surprise and relief (misplaced as we later found out), it was NOT cancer. The tissue submitted as a tumor was actually an infection. The infection was of unknown cause or origin, but suspected as being a fungal infection. However, all fungal tests that we could test for came back as "negative". The neurologist asked if Yankee had every been "out of the area". We told him it was easier to tell him where Yankee had NOT been....he's lived in Georgia, two different locations in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and two locations in South Korea. He's also traveled from Florida to New York to Washington State to Utah to Texas, and all the states in between. For the last 5 weeks, we've been praying Yankee would regain use of his rear legs. We were seeing what we hoped were signs of improvement, but not nearly as much as we wanted. We seemed to take one step forward and one step backwards. The latest "backwards" step was a vicious bladder infection related to Yankee's paralysis. We just started two strong antibiotics for the infection. It was all too much for him and this morning Yankee passed away due to complications related to all of this nightmare. My sister is posting him and hopefully we will get some answers on what caused this infection and the loss of my gorgeous sweet and gentle boy. Yankee sired three litters. In his first litter, he has a daughter who is titled in agility & rally. His other daughter from that litter has both of her majors, her Herding Intermediate title (and is trialing in Advanced), is titled in Rally, and was High in Trial in Herding at the GSDCA 2010 national. In his second litter, a male and female went to Australia and both finished their Australian Championships easily. In his 3rd litter, a male is titled in herding and has a major and 9 points. Yankee was the first male GSD Champion to earn an MX & MXJ. He also was the first Champion to earn an Excellent FAST title. He was a fantastic tracking dog and after taking a couple of years off while we were in Korea, we were back training again and Yankee was ready for his TDX. He also was in training for more herding titles. Yankee was also my "working farm" dog and sorted sheep for lessons as well as farm chores. My goal this year was to trial him in C course (tending) for the first time and also get his A course Herding Intermediate title. Even paralyzed the last few weeks, Yankee would sit in his x-pen in my front yard and "coach" Cassie (his mother) as she learned to tend the sheep. He was pretty vocal about it and sure he could do it better! Yankee adored little dogs and puppies. He would "wrestle" with Willow our Papillon and always let her think she was winning. He'd lay on his back while tugging with her and tug just hard enough that she was sure he was "trying". She worshipped him but also bossed him around and he was very tolerant! Yankee's favorite thing in the world (besides his sheep) was his ball. He loved ALL balls...jolly balls, kong balls, tennis balls, soccer balls, and his absolute favorite...go-frr balls. Yankee would do ANYTHING for a go-frrr ball. He learned weave poles in record time "for the ball", he tracked so I would throw the ball after he downed at his last article. He ran agility always hoping the "silly ball" would go flying. Yankee was definitely our "family" dog. He loved all of us and adored my parents and sister (both of whom he spent a lot of time with). Yankee has left a huge hole in our family that will ache for a long time. Run, herd sheep, and play with those "silly balls" while you wait for us, my Yankee Doodle Dog. You will always be my special boy. I adore you and miss you. ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2011.
