God Bless You for taking in this boy. I know he is in VERY good hands now. I wish I could have taken him, but the Inn is full here. I am also still very upset about the last Resce that we lost. I don't think I am in any frame of mind to take in another ill dog again...until the next one looks in my eyes that breaks my heart. I will say a prayer that Wylie's condition improves. Unless you are someone that Rescue's dogs, and takes in an older dog, or a sickly dog, you totally don't understand. To Pat & Vicky, and all the other Rescue friends...A Very Speical THANK YOU! First he was scheduled to be neutered at a very large rescue facility in Ohio. When he arrived from the pound, they would not do it. They said he was too underweight and had a Grade 4 heart murmur, and in poor condition so THEY sent him back to the pound. I got the call and after talking with Vicki Burkey we decided that he would still come here and we would make the decision of his fate and if it was meant to be he would go to the Bridge with loving arms around him. The person who alert us to him picked him up for us and we met to get him. I thought I was prepared for everything but I wasn't; the only thing big on this this boy was his head!! Yes, bigger than his butt. He was loaded with fleas to start, looked as bad or worse than you see on Animal Precinct, had a terrible skin condition, his ears were almost closed shut from infection, dirt and God knows what else and he absolutely stunk!! But he was happy to see us, was very strong on a leash and just was still full of life. A skeleton with a glimmer in his old eyes. Vicki's vet was only down the road a few miles and she took us in immediately. When she checked him she only heard a Grade 2 heart murmur. She did skin scrapings to see what we were dealing with, put some frontline on him to start to kill the fleas before he was bathed at my house (I know this isn't protocol with Frontline (no baths) but we did it); his skin condition thankfully wasn't a mange and his ears were loa ded with yeast infection. While we were waiting for results, Vicki got the nail clippers and did his nails which had probably never been done. Age guess is 10+. While we were in the vet he "ask" Vicki to get him so food so she trotted over to the store and got him a box of milkbones for the ride home because he was such a good boy at the vet and he ask her for a treat :-) Finally we are on our way to Aliquippa PA; his new home. First thing was to get all the other dogs rearranged because of the fleas; I gave him a small meal and into the booster bath he went. He absolutely loved it; I scrubbed and rubbed and massaged his wiry, leathery skin and what hair he did have left. We sat on the floor afterward and I introduced him to the blowdryer and he was quite smitten with that - LOL There is absolutely no muscle mass on this dog; his skin hangs in pouches off his rump area and the skin around his chest bone looks like he was an "old nursing brood bitch". Under his chin his neck has no hair and is very leathery from either being tied or years of infestation. I have started putting aloe cream on his elbows and neck just to sooth him. He is on vitamins, antibiotics, and medicated baths and ear washes and nourishing food. Last night he spent in his large indoor heated kennel run in my "Florida Room". He ate several more meals and drank fresh water (which he loves). This morning he went outside and did his business like an old gentleman gimping around but he came in wagging his tail. No accidents in his run during the night!! Today we do another medicated bath, work on his ears some more and hope all the fleas are gone!! He's had breakfast and is waiting for brunch now *grin*.....so this is my Christmas present from my "angel Calif" *very big grin* This is truly a humbling experience; I doubt he could ever be placed even when he is back to reasonable health but if you ever get a chance to help an old dog to live out his life in peace I suggest you do it. You don't have to do "heroic" measures when their time comes but WOW the satisfaction of helping them in their golden years is priceless. They come into our lives for some reason; Vicki has "Guy" from rescue a few months ago and now "Wylie" is here with me...and I can't explain "WHY" Vicki can perhaps tell you some more about him. We are indebted to her vet "Diane" for taking us immediately, spending a lot of time with him, and helping ease some of our doubts with his conditions.
