The answer to your question pretty much depends upon where
in the world you live. In this country, a dog is whatever
it is registered as. If I register my white with AWSA, for
example, it's a White Shepherd. If I register it with AKC,
it's a German Shepherd Dog. If I register it with UKC,
then I get a choice between WS or wGSD. Presumably, I
could even take a page from the pit bull handbook and
dual-register my dog as a WS (UKC) *and* a GSD (AKC).
Now, if I lived in Germany, my white dog would most likely
be registered as a Berger Blanc Suisse (BBS - FCI-Standard
#347 ) and be considered a totally separate breed - seeing
as how registered white GSDs do not exist according to the
SV studbook. ;)
And on the above note, I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate all the breeders and owners of
white dogs all over the world who worked so long and so
hard to obtain breed separation for these worthy dogs.
Their hard work has finally been rewarded and brought to
fruition. We have received word from the FCI that, as of
July 5th, 2011, the BBS is now a fully FCI-accepted breed
and eligible for CACIB as of July 6th, 2011. It's just too
bad that people in North America couldn't get in on that.
And so it goes... :/
