I've found that you can usually predict whelping day by counting back 63 days
from day of ovulation ( if you've done progesterone tests and know what day
that was)
The other indicator is usually the night before, they'll be very restless and
keep you up hoping for puppies. Then they sleep the next day and the next
night when you are dead tired from staying up the night before....THAT'S the
night they'll have pups.
I've learned to sleep through their "dry run" and be fresh for the real thing.
