Oh gosh no, mine still sleep in the box at 3 weeks :( I remove the pig
rails so they can't climb out. I have a separate 3 car garage and an
attached 2 car garage, storing a box standing up isn't an issue :)))))))

Kathy the wood boxes with the two inch pvc pig rails are great, used one
for years but I had ( have) so much stuff in my garage about two or three
years ago I got rid of it!... And yes a litter of 3 week old GSDs will beat
up a Dura Whelp box, my pups are usually out of the box and in the kennel
before 3 weeks, at 4 weeks they are chewing on chicken backs! Tough dogs
these German Shepherds! FB

I have a Dura-whelp one and used it once. A litter of nine not quite 3
week old puppies destroyed it and I relied on zip strips to hold it together
until they were old enough to not be contained in a box. I went ba_ck to my
heavy wood, cut free by Lowes, no bottom, PVC pig rails. That particular
box is 11+ years old and has housed a dozen litters or so. Maybe $40 to
build. Lowes and Home Depot will cut the wood and PVC for free, poke around in
the shelving aisle.

Now that you mention it I believe the Dura-whelp boxes are in-fact made
out of plastic, and they are super light weight, but strong, come in
different sizes and cleaning is super easy, I'd bet there folks other than me
that
use it! Ed

Tedi found corrugated plastic on the internet, and then found a local
source. They have large sheets, and you score it where you want to bend it,
and
then fold it to the shape you want. It washes off, and Tedi used duct
tape to hold the shape of a whelping box. It weighs nothing and is stronger
than cardboard.

When she told them what she wanted it for, they were so pleased they
scored it _for her, and didn't charge her for it. It worked great.

Since we haven't had a litter in two years, we haven't used it again. But,
we have a bitch in whelp, so maybe we will dig it out of the garage.

Dura-whelp.... They make outstanding whelping boxes! They are made out of
cardboard, and they use wood railings for the edges to keep mom from laying
on pups, when you are done the box folds up quickly and you put it back in
the box! Cost about 200 bucks, money well spent Ed

I am thinking about making a whelping box until I can afford this Jonart
box. I would like it to be durable for at least two years so I will be able
to get this one.
Does anyone have any suggestions on wood types and do you recommend to
finish the wood with a safe paint/finishing? Thank you in advance. Angela
