I use heat under the bedding that I prefer (sterilon). There are mats
made specifically for whelping boxes in a variety of sizes. Generally one
side will heat to 98 and the other 80 something.
I use ceramic heat for the room temperature.
I know of several fires that have been started by heat lamp-type set ups
and quite honestly they scare me to death.
