Last Friday I had a 14 week puppy returned to me. The woman told me she
was going to be in the hospital for 10 days and didn't know if she was
going to get better. She thought it best for the puppy to be placed in a
new home. She didn't specifically say what was wrong, but I got the
impression she had emotional issues ( perhaps in addition to physical
problems ).
Then she called Monday and wanted me to keep the puppy for her. Not just
for the 10 days, but for several months. She said her fiancé who lives in
Calf. ( we're on the East Coast) was going to "come and take care of
her". My original feeling was it would be better to put the puppy in a
permanent home, but the woman has been texting me begging me to keep the
puppy for her. She's offered to pay me and said she would take the puppy
for long weekends in a month or two.
I certainly understand the love for a dog, and I realize that sometimes
a dog is the only reason people get up in the mornings, But:
I'm worried about the woman's ability to care for the puppy. If the puppy
would get loose, could she even go get her? A 14 week old puppy is one
thing, a 6 month old is something else.
I'm worried about finding a home for the puppy if the woman decides she
can't keep her when the pup is a full sized dog. We can find homes for
puppys, but adult dogs can be a different matter.
I'm also worried the dog will end up a screwed up mess by going for "long
weekends" and coming back. You know how these GSD's bond to you. I
wouldn't want a problem with seperation anxiety to develop.
        Any thoughts?
                              SueT
